Contra Costa County is seeking a Public Defender. As the Department Head, the Public Defender is the executive leader and senior attorney responsible for the development, administration, and direction of the County’s program for legal defense of indigent criminal defendants. The Public Defender’s Office employs 145 full time staff members dedicated to carry out the department’s mission to ensure justice for indigent persons accused of crimes in Contra Costa County. The County is looking for an innovative perspective and proven leadership in this role. The next Public Defender must prioritize engagement with other stakeholders and recognize the mutual interdependence of public safety and judicial agencies, build meaningful relationships with peers, and strive to find collaborative, mutually beneficial solutions to county-wide problems. This position is appointed by the Board of Supervisors and is the primary advisor to the County Administrator and the Board of Supervisors on issues relating to the Office.
