School & College Legal Services of California (SCLS) is seeking a General Counsel to lead its legal team and oversee the delivery of legal services to public school districts, community colleges, and educational institutions across California. Reporting directly to the Joint Powers Board, this senior management role requires legal expertise, strategic foresight, and strong leadership to guide critical education law and policy matters. The General Counsel manages attorneys and staff, sets organizational goals, and oversees key functions including HR, budget planning, and client engagement, fostering a collaborative and mission-driven office culture dedicated to educational excellence and equity.
The General Counsel will be a strategic, solution-oriented legal professional with deep expertise in education and public law, capable of navigating the complexities of public education in a progressive environment. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in governance, labor and employment, compliance, and policy development, with a strong grasp of state and federal education laws. This role demands clear communication, sound judgment, and the ability to deliver timely, research-based guidance while managing risk and addressing evolving legal needs. Success requires emotional intelligence, discretion, and a collaborative, service-driven mindset.

Location: Santa Rosa, California
Salary: $235,000 - $286,000
