The City of Kalamazoo is seeking a Community Planning and Economic Development Director. The Director will shape strategies that support Kalamazoo’s economic vitality, development, and quality of life, while leading strategic planning for economic development, land development, and zoning. The Director will oversee major economic development initiatives, public policies, community-based projects, and programs; build strong partnerships with elected officials, City departments, community organizations, and neighborhood leaders; manage economic development agreements; and lead strategies for business recruitment, outreach, and retention.

The ideal candidate is an inspirational, collaborative, and proactive leader who builds trust, brings people together, and approaches challenges with a solutions-oriented mindset. They will be comfortable navigating change, evaluating current practices, identifying opportunities for improvement, and turning ideas into action. The next Director will also be a strong communicator who is comfortable engaging residents, civic organizations, Commissioners, and the development community. Above all, they will bring energy, vision, and a commitment to partnership as Kalamazoo continues to grow and build a vibrant future for its residents, businesses, and neighborhoods.
