Solid Waste Director
City of Bakersfield

The City of Bakersfield, CA is seeking a Solid Waste Director. The ideal candidate is a seasoned leader with experience in the management of municipal solid waste operations, including the planning and direction of a variety of complex solid waste services and programs. Extensive budget, strategic planning, and capital facility and equipment operations/maintenance experience is expected in addition to a background working in highly regulated settings.

• Big-picture thinker who can understand and manage all facets of division operations and the many interrelated pieces and develop an integrated view

• Decisive problem solver who is open to input and recommendations from staff

• Exceptional communicator and presenter with the ability to effectively promote the accomplishments of the Division and convey the vision and mission of the organization

• Visionary leader with the desire to help design what the City of Bakersfield solid waste will look like in the next ten years

• Strong knowledge of current and pending California regulations and mandates related to solid waste

management, specifically Cal Recycle regulations, along with the ability to effectively anticipate, plan for, interpret, and implement these regulations and mandates

• Interpersonal skills and political acumen to establish and maintain effective relationships with representatives from other City departments/divisions, City Council, City Manager’s Office, state and local regulators, contractors, various community groups, and the public

• Knowledge of refuse collection and recycling equipment is of greatest importance, followed by, knowledge of composting industry methods, equipment, and regulations. Knowledge of landfill monitoring and maintenance regulations and practices is desirable

Salary: $114,090 - $138,681
