The successful candidate will have proven track record of successful professional leadership and be able to effectively cultivate and maintain cooperative working relationships within the organization and the community. While technical expertise in planning and zoning is required and the Assistant Director must be able to review and establish high standards for lower-level staff work, this is a senior management role with a focus on the implementation of strategic objectives, the mentoring of junior staff, and the smooth administration of the Department. The ideal candidate must have excellent critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills and outstanding oral and written communication skills. A background of leadership in a public sector organization is ideal. Strong technical knowledge (CEQA, Subdivision Map Act, etc.) and planning skills, a willingness to invest in staff development and community relationships, and a passion for the work are helpful.
